Calicut (also known as Kozhikode), a coastal city located in Kerala is famous for its history, culture and natural beauty. The city is well-known as having been the point where the Portuguese explorer, Vasco Da Gama first landed in India in 1498 and made the city into a major spice trading center.
The city was also known for its trade in timber. The Kallayi River was used for transporting a majority of this timber from the nearby Nilambur forest region. It is one of the smallest rivers in Calicut, spanning a length of 40km. It originates in the Western Ghats and was connected to the Chaliyar River through two man-made canals for timber transportation. Though this river was the nerve-center for Calicut’s timber trade, today it is mainly used for recreational purposes.
The Chaliyar River is the fourth longest river in Calicut and empties out into the Arabian Sea. There are numerous places of natural beauty and cultural significance along the Kallayi River and its extension towards the Chaliyar River. You could visit the picturesque Kakkayam dam nestled within lush greenery and teeming with interesting wildlife. This area is also perfect for rock climbing and trekking. The stunning Urakkuzhi waterfall nearby and shouldn’t be missed either.
The Peruvannamuzhi dam is another scenic picnic spot nestled within the hills. You could go boating here and visit the islands or visit the beautiful garden, bird sanctuary or crocodile farm instead. Kalipoika, just 2km from the city, also offers boating and other fun recreational facilities. The coastal town of Beypore is where the Chaliyar River forms an estuary as it drains out into the Arabian Sea. The area is known for its biodiversity as well as having been a great trading center, fishing harbor, and a ship-building center.
And if you are interested in places of cultural significance, then head to the Mannur temple believed to be one of the 108 temples built by the great sage Parashurama. It’s believed to be around a 1000-years-old. Nadapurram is of significance as an important Islamic center, and shouldn’t be missed.
